Title:

AranĂ£ wants land (1)

Aranã wants his people
Aranã wants his ground
Aranã wants his roots
His culture, his tradition
Aranã wants land
Aranã wants land
Aranã wants land
Aranã wants land
Aranã's joining up, joining up
In the valley of Jequitinhonha(2)
Aranã's joining up
He's had enough of this shame
Aranã wants earth
Aranã wants his people
Lost across Minas Gerais
Aranã wants his land
He can't bear suffering any more.

1 Editor's note: The Aranãs are a tribe of the Valley of the Jequitinhonha River, which, with the help of the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT), succeeded in recovering the land that had been lost to the farmers of the region. The poem was written on April 15, 2000, on the departure of the indigenous caravan from Belo Horizonte to take part in the Conference of Indigenous Peoples in Porto Seguro, state of Bahia. The poem has become the anthem of the Aranãs.

2 Editor's note: Jequitinhonha is an important river in the north of Minas Gerais.
